Charles Zephaniah Shaffer was born in Pennsylvania on 1 May 1842. He was a volunteer in the Civil War and moved to Grantsville, Utah Territory, in 1893. On 1 January 1895, he married Ellen P. Barrus. Shaffer worked as a carpenter and died in Grantsville on 29 August 1904.[1]
