John Taylor

November 1, 1808–July 25, 1887

Born at Milnthorpe, Westmoreland, England; son of Agnes Taylor and James Taylor. Emigrated from England to Upper Canada, circa 1832. Married Leonora Cannon, 1833; participated in plural marriage. Baptized in Canada, 1836. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga County, Ohio, circa 1837, and to Far West, Caldwell County, Missouri, 1838. Ordained a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, 1838. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois, circa 1841. Admitted to the Council of Fifty, 1844. Migrated to the Salt Lake Valley, 1847. Member of the Utah territorial legislature, 1857–1876. Presided over the church after the death of Brigham Young, 1877. Served as third president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1880–1887.
