Born 11 Jan. 1827 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.1 Son of George Cannon and Ann Quayle.2 Father-in-law of EBW’s daughter Elizabeth Ann Wells Cannon.3 Baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1840, at Liverpool.4 Emigrated with his family aboard the Sidney, arriving in New Orleans 11 Nov. 1842.5 Apprenticed to his uncle John Taylor, Apr. 1843; worked in the Times and Seasons printshop in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois.6 Migrated to the Salt Lake Valley with the Edward Hunter/Joseph Horne pioneer company, arriving 29 Sept. 1847.7 Served missions to California, 1849, and to the Sandwich Islands, 1850–1854.8 Married Elizabeth Hoagland, 10 Dec. 1854, in Salt Lake City.9 Served a mission to San Francisco, 1855–1857, where he founded and was editor of the Western Standard and printed the Book of Mormon in Hawaiian.10 Ordained to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, 26 Aug. 1860.11 Editor of the Deseret News, 1867–1873, 1877–1879.12 Served as a Utah territorial delegate to U.S. Congress, 1873–1880.13 Welcomed EBW and others to Washington DC, 10 Jan. 1879; advised them on political action throughout their visit.14 Incarcerated in the Utah Territorial Penitentiary on charges of unlawful cohabitation, 17 Sept. 1888–20 Feb. 1889.15 Visited at the penitentiary by EBW.16 Conducted funeral services for Daniel H. Wells, husband of EBW, 28 Mar. 1891.17 Served as a counselor to four presidents of the church.18 Died 12 Apr. 1901 in Monterey, Monterey Co., California.19

George F. Richards

George Quayle Cannon was born on 11 January 1827 in Liverpool, England, the son of George Cannon and Ann Quayle. He immigrated with his family to the United States in 1842 and came to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Cannon served a mission to Hawaii for four years from 1850 to 1854 and was editor of the Deseret News for several years. He became a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1860 and was the owner and publisher of the church periodical Juvenile Instructor. He served four terms as a territorial delegate to Congress beginning in 1872. Cannon became a member of the First Presidency in 1873 and died on 12 April 1901 in Monterey, California.20
