Ellis Reynolds, Dr. E. R. Shipp

Born 20 Jan. 1847 in Davis Co., Iowa.1 Daughter of William Fletcher Reynolds and Anna Hawley.2 Married Milford Bard Shipp, 5 May 1866, in Salt Lake City; ten children.3 Graduated with honors from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, 14 Mar. 1878.4 Established a medical practice in Salt Lake City, 1878.5 Established a school of nursing and obstetrics.6 Member of the Deseret Hospital board of Directors, 1882–1884.7 With her husband and Margaret C. Shipp, founded the medical magazine Salt Lake Sanitarian: A Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery, published 1888–1889.8 Founding member and later president of the Utah Women’s Press Club; served as EBW’s recording secretary, 1892.9 Spoke at the National Council of Women meeting in Washington DC, 1895.10 Served on the Relief Society general board, 1898–1907, and in the Young Ladies’ Mutual Improvement Association.11 Served missions to Mexico, Canada, Arizona, Colorado, and Idaho to teach nursing and obstetrics, beginning 1899.12 Died 31 Jan. 1939 in Salt Lake City.13
