Emmeline B. Wells
Born 17 May 1834 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.1 Son of George Cannon and Ann Quayle.2 Uncle to EBW’s son-in-law John Q. Cannon.3 Immigrated with his family aboard the SS Sidney from Liverpool to New Orleans, arriving 11 Nov. 1842.4 Arrived in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, spring 1843.5 As orphans, he and his siblings migrated to the Salt Lake Valley with the Allen Taylor pioneer company, arriving 10 Oct. 1849.6 Worked as a printer’s apprentice at the Deseret News, 1852.7 Served a mission with John Taylor to the eastern United States, 1854–1858.8 Married Sarah Maria Mousley, 18 July 1858.9 Participated in plural marriage.10 Appointed to help colonize what became southern Utah, helping to establish St. George, Washington Co., Utah Territory; served as the first mayor of St. George, 1861–1867.11 Business manager of the Deseret News, 1867–1874.12 President of the Salt Lake Stake, 1876–1904.13 Served as Salt Lake County recorder, 1876–1884.14 Served as director and vice president of the Deseret News Company, beginning 1880.15 Advised EBW on the viability of the Woman’s Exponent and on issues of local and national interest.16 Died 7 June 1915 in Salt Lake City.17
