Horace Gibson Whitney

Born 6 Jan. 1858 in Salt Lake City.[1] Son of Horace Kimball Whitney and Mary Cravath.[2] Baptized as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1866.[3] Chairman and officer of the Wasatch Literary Association, 1874–1878.[4] Assisted EBW with business dealings, 1878.[5] Married Marion Mumford Beatie, 10 Jan. 1884.[6] Directed the Salt Lake City Eighteenth Ward choir, 1885–1920.[7] Active in many financial, industrial, and civic organizations, 1885–1920.[8] Manager of the Home Dramatic Club, 1889–1894.[9] Editor of the Daily Herald, 1890.[10] Secretary, treasurer, and member of the board of directors of the Heber J. Grant Company, 1890–1894.[11] Represented the Newel K. Whitney family at gatherings, 1891–1904.[12] Business manager for the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir, 1896.[13] Secretary for the general Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association, 1897.[14] Member of the organizing committee for the Historical Society in Utah, 1897.[15] Committee member for the Pioneer Jubilee celebration, 1897.[16] Business manager of the Deseret News, 1 Jan. 1899–15 Apr. 1920.[17] Authored The Drama in Utah, 1915.[18] Served on the Church’s General Music Committee, 1920.[19] Died 25 Oct. 1920 in Salt Lake City.[20]
