William H. Uaua

Resident of Lahaina, Maui; member of Hawaiian ali‘i (nobility); graduate of Lahainaluna; at home of Jonathan Napela in Wailuku, Maui, in March 1851 when GQC stopped there; baptized and ordained a teacher in January 1852, four months before his wife was baptized; served as clerk of first conference held by the Hawaiian mission in April 1852, where he was ordained priest and appointed to collect tithing; took active role in establishment of Church in islands; noted for his preaching; labored with William Perkins on Moloka‘i in June 1852; appointed to accompany James Hawkins on a preaching tour through Hamakua, Maui, in August 1852; assisted with beginning of missionary work at Lahaina, Maui, in November 1852; raised his wife from dead through priesthood blessing in early 1853; ordained elder while on O‘ahu in April 1853; participated in beginnings of missionary work in Honolulu; preached throughout O‘ahu during subsequent year; imprisoned in Honolulu for baptizing on Sunday in May 1853; served as clerk of July 1854 mission conference; elected to Hawaiian legislature as representative from Lahaina in 1856; called to preside over the Honolulu District in 1869; reportedly introduced “aloha” greeting during meeting at La‘ie, O‘ahu; moved to La‘ie and then back to Maui, where he died.
