Born in Montague, Massachusetts; founding editor of Kennebec Journal, published in Augusta, Maine, 1825–49; served in both houses of Maine legislature; member U.S. House of Representatives, 1843–47; U.S. commissioner to Sandwich Islands, 1850–54; died in Augusta, Maine.
