Born in Cumberland, England; member of vanguard pioneer company that entered Salt Lake Valley with Brigham Young in July 1847; traveled to California gold field in 1849 in company with GQC; with GQC at Slap Jack Bar when called on mission to Hawai‘i in September 1850; assigned to island of Kaua‘i, along with William Farrer; left the islands in February 1851; spent time in California gold fields before returning to Utah; killed along with John Quayle in an August 1853 Indian ambush while hauling wood east of Salt Lake City.
