Jedediah Morgan Grant

1816 — 1856

Born in Windsor, New York; baptized in 1833; known as powerful speaker; served seven missions between 1835 and 1845, including a three-year mission to southern U.S.; arrived in Salt Lake Valley in 1847; elected Salt Lake City’s first mayor in 1851; that same year sent on mission to gather Latter-day Saints still living along Missouri River in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, and surrounding areas; ordained an apostle and sustained as second counselor to Brigham Young in the First Presidency in April 1854; died in Salt Lake City following brief illness.
