Elbert P. Jones

1814 — 1852

Native of Kentucky; traveled overland to San Francisco in 1846; lawyer by training; served as first editor of San Francisco’s first newspaper, the California Star, published by Sam Brannan; second proprietor of Portsmouth House, a local hotel; married former Brooklyn passenger Sarah Kittleman in 1847; moved to Charleston, South Carolina, prior to 1852, where he died.
