David Rice

Son-in-law of Mr./Brother Birch; haole resident of Waiehu, Maui; baptized January 1852; ordained elder, April 1852; frequent attendee at the socials and meetings held by the missionaries on Maui; provided housing and other assistance for the missionaries; anticipated immigrating to U.S., January 1853; divorced by wife who did not want to immigrate; unable to obtain passage, he determined to serve mission instead; sent to Big Island, April 1853; returned to Maui because of difficulties the Latter-day Saints were experiencing on Big Island, August 1853; called again to Big Island, October 1853; confined upon arrival; returned to Maui the following spring; engaged in business of making charcoal; attended July 1854 mission conference at Honolulu; living in Latter-day settlement on Lana‘i, March 1855; captained mission-owned sloop Lanai on voyage from O‘ahu to Lana‘i in February 1856.
