Chauncey Walker West

1827 — 1870

Born in Erie County, Pennsylvania; moved with family to New York, where they were baptized; settled in Nauvoo, Illinois; immigrated to Salt Lake Valley in 1847; one of first settlers of Provo, Utah, in 1849; called on mission to Siam (Thailand) in 1852 but labored in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and India when transportation to Siam could not be obtained; returned to U.S., arriving at San Francisco in September 1854; moved to Ogden after returning to Utah the following year; called as bishop for Weber County in 1856; served mission to England, 1862–1863; contracted to help build the transcontinental railroad west of Ogden; died in Ogden, his health weakened as result of his work on railroad.
