Alexander (Kamehameha IV) Liholiho

Son of Mataio Kekuanaoa (governor of Oah‘u) and Kinau (daughter of Kamehameha I); younger brother of Lot Kapuaiwa (Kamehameha V); nephew of kings Kamehameha II and Kamehameha III; left islands with his brother in October 1849 on year-long diplomatic mission to France, England, and U.S.; became king in December 1854 following death of Kamehameha III; opposed annexation of Hawaiian Islands by U.S.; with his wife, Emma, established Queen’s Hospital in Honolulu for sick and destitute Hawaiians.
