John Quayle Cannon

19 April 1857 — 14 January 1931

Born 19 Apr. 1857 at San Francisco.[1] Son of George Quayle Cannon and Elizabeth Hoagland.[2] Married first Elizabeth Ann Wells, EBW’s daughter, 17 Mar. 1880, at Salt Lake City.[3] Worked on the editorial staff of the Deseret News, 1880.[4] Served a mission to the British Isles, 1881–1884.[5] Appointed president of the North German conference, May 1882.[6] Served as president of the Swiss and German mission, July 1883–June 1884.[7] Served as second counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, 1884–1886.[8] Excommunicated, 8 Sept. 1886.[9] Divorced, 9 Sept. 1886.[10] Married second Louisa Martha Wells, EBW’s youngest daughter, 10 Sept. 1886.[11] Wife died, 16 May 1887, at San Francisco.[12] Remarried Elizabeth Ann Wells Cannon, 13 May 1888.[13] Editor of the Deseret News, 1892–1898, 1919–1922, 1928–1931.[14] Commanded Utah’s Troop of Torrey’s Rough Riders (also known as Company I of the Second U.S. Volunteer Cavalry), May–Oct. 1898.[15] Died 14 Jan. 1931 at Salt Lake City.[16]
