Francis Smith

Born 3 Apr. 1858 in Lockport, Niagara Co., New York.[1] Daughter of John Marston Smith and Elizabeth Reilly.[2] Graduated from Bay View Institute, 1876, and from the Woman’s Law Class, New York University.[3] Married first Jay Humphreys by 1880; two children; widowed, 27 Nov. 1883, in New York.[4] Married second Thomas St. John Gaffney, 17 Aug. 1894, in Summit, Union Co., New Jersey. [5] President of the National Council of Women, 1899–1902.[6] Invited EBW to dine and to meet to prepare for the International Council of Women, 26 Feb. and 24 June 1899.[7] Attended the International Council of Women in London, June 26–5 July 1899.[8] Met and socialized with EBW in New York, 2–4 May 1900.[9] Lived in Germany while her husband served as Consul General, 1905–1915.[10] Returned to Summit, June 1920.[11] Died 23 Feb. 1945 in Summit.[12]
