Ellen Virginia Batelle

2 September 1847–25 November 1895

Born 2 Sept. 1847 in Clarksburg, Harrison Co., Virginia (later in West Virginia).[1] Daughter of Gordon Batelle and Maria Louisa Tucker.[2] Married William Albert Dietrick, 12 Aug. 1869, in Wheeling, Ohio Co., West Virginia; three children.[3] Cofounder of the Women’s Educational and Industrial Union in Kentucky, 1884.[4] Founded the Home for Aged and Indigent Women, later named the Covington Ladies’ Home, in Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky, 1886.[5] First vice president of the Kentucky Equal Rights Association, 1888.[6] Influential state and national officer in the National Suffrage Association, 1888–1895.[7] Socialized with EBW at the National Women’s Suffrage Conference, 1891.[8] Family members visited with EBW in Salt Lake City, 20 Apr. 1892.[9] Lecturer and author of two books as well as periodical articles, 1892–1895.[10] Participated in the National Woman’s Suffrage Meetings held at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and attended by EBW, 1893.[11] Corresponded with EBW, 1894.[12] Died 25 Nov. 1895 in Cambridge, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, following surgery.[13] Member of the revision committee for Woman’s Bible, Part 2, published in 1898.[14]
