H. K. Kaleohano

Brother of Maiola; born in Pulehu, Maui; member of the ali‘i (nobility); attended Lahainaluna Seminary with Jonathan Napela, a relative; at Napela’s house in March 1851 when GQC first visited Wailuku, Maui; provided GQC room and board in Kula, Maui, beginning June 1851; baptized July 1851; ordained teacher in August 1851; assisted GQC and James Keeler in preaching gospel in Kula and Ko‘olau during August and September 1851; took leading role in the Church in central Maui, including the establishment of “singing schools ”; married Lilia Kaahanui in October 1851; served as clerk of first mission conference held in the islands in April 1852; appointed to assist Keeler in preaching the gospel from Honua‘ula to Kipahulu in August 1852; accompanied Keeler on mission to eastern Maui in May 1853; served mission to Big Island, October 1853–April 1854, after having been ordained an elder; appointed bishop by Walter Murray Gibson; moved his family to the Latter-day Saint settlement at La‘ie, O‘ahu, where he acted as liaison between the Church and the Hawaiian crown; filled mission to Kaua‘i in 1869 and to Big Island in 1872; popular speaker frequently called upon to preach on O‘ahu and other islands during later life; died in La‘ie.
